SERVICE ABOVE SELF: How Rotary Club of Bukoto is boosting Education in Kabutemba Local Community

Children of Kabutemba Village, Kyegonza Sub county in Gomba district have for sometime now been saved from walking many kilometers to receive education.

This followed the construction of St. Peters Primary School in the area over a decade ago with by the Rotary Club of Bukoto in conjuction with their juniors, the Rotaract club of Bukoto aswell as friends and partners under the “Adopt A Village” Initiative.

The school that is still under further development nears completion everyday that passes because every leadership that comes adds a brick in one way or another amid the financial hardships.

Led by their Presidents, a section of members from the two clubs conducted a reachout to the school on Friday 30th September 2022 where they donated 550 Reading books for the young learners as opportunity for them to sharpen their Reading and comprehension skills.

Rhyming under the theme “Reading as a Smart Way of Life” under the Basic Education & Literacy Enhancement Program (BELEP), the books donation also aimed at preparing these learners to compete favorably at National level and in their future global encounters.

While there, senior Rotarian Dr. Nabila Siddiqui Farhat explained the benefits of reading to learners and asked the school administration to find a day off where all learners and the entire staff would engage in Reading.

This would ensure full participation in the DEAR (Drop Everything And Read) program, a flagship initiated by by the District Governor Rotary District 9213 and Bukoto Rotarian Rtn. Dr. Mike Kennedy Sebalu aimed at enhancing basic education ad literacy.

Speaking to this platform, Rtn Alfred Okoya the current President of Rotary Club of Bukoto was grateful for the contribution made.

“We place very high importance on education because of the value it has in society . We are therefore proud to make this modest contribution to this school and we are hopeful it will go a long way in improving the education of this community” he said.

The Bukoto Rotaract President Rct. Melvin Ainebyone also commended his members for their efforts in the construction of the nursery blocks at the school, a task they exclusively handle in the school’s current expansion.

Away from Basic Education and Literacy, the Rotary club intervention in the Kabutemba Village also covers the other 6 areas of Rotary Focus that include Peace Building and conflict prevention, Disease prevention and Treatment, Water Sanitation and Hygiene, Community Economic Development, Maternal and Child Health and Supporting Environment.

In that same regard, the two clubs will be returning to Kabutemba Village on 17th December 2022 for a very big Medical camp where free treatments, tests and diagnosis, vaccinations, minor surgeries, counselling, dental, pediatric, counseling and antenatal care services among others will be made available for the community in collaboration with the Ministry of Health and other Private Health Service Providers.

Prior to this camp, the Rotary club of Bukoto has organised a “Rotary Family Fun Day” on 26th November 2022 at Legends Grounds in Lugogo where Rotarians from the two districts 9213 and 9214, families, Rotary guests and Corporate entities are expected to attend.

They will all together feature in indoor games competitions and other fun activities for both children and adults. Proceeds will then support a Village project in Kabutemba by enhancing access to clean drinking water and better Sanitation of a health center being constructed by the club to improve access to medical care.
