MTN Uganda on Friday won a prestigious award in the 2nd edition of the Prudential Best HR Practices survey. The Prudential Best HR Practices Survey is a human capital and talent management survey aimed at allowing employers to hear from their employees on how they assess their organization’s HR practices.
he 2022 survey focused on 14 thematic areas: Company performance and confidence, reward and recognition, employee engagement and enablement, quality and innovation, employee wellness, diversity and inclusion, learning and development, workplace culture & environment, and environmental, social and governance (ESG) compliance.
MTN Uganda emerged as the winner in the thematic areas of Environment, Social and Governance (ESG) Compliance during the awards gala event held at the Kampala Serena Hotel. Commenting on the award, Michael Kawesa-Sekadde, General Manager, of Human Resources at MTN-Uganda said they are glad that the company’s efforts in complying with ESG principles in its operation are being recognized.
“This award is a testament that indeed we are on the right track in our operation. MTN Uganda considers ESG management and performance as an opportunity to implement our vision of creating shared value for all our stakeholders through responsible economic, environmental and social practices,” he said
He added: As the impacts of climate change become increasingly visible around the world, MTN Uganda believes in the benefits of a healthy planet and has pledged its commitment to achieving net zero emissions by 2040.” Currently, MTN Uganda is implementing numerous initiatives in line with the ESG principles to conserve the environment and combat climate change.
Last year, the telecom company transitioned more than 64% of its telecom masts to hydroelectricity and has adopted green solutions in its office premises and data centres; thereby reducing our carbon emissions (tCo2) by 4.4%. The telecom company targets to reduce Green House Emissions from 11,882 tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent (tCOe2) which was the baseline in 2021 to 5941 tCOe2 by 2030 and to 0 tCOe2 by 2040 for scopes 1, 2, and 3 where Scope 1 covers direct emissions from owned or controlled sources, scope 2 covers indirect emissions from the generation of purchased electricity, steam, heating, and cooling consumed by the reporting company and Scope 3 includes all other indirect emissions in a company’s value chain.
Prime Minister, Robina Nabbanja, through State Minister for Kampala and Metropolitan Affairs, Kabuye Kyofatogabye, congratulated MTN Uganda and other winners for the awards. She urged employers to embrace the feedback from their employees to continuously improve their HR practices. Prudential Uganda Chief Executive Officer, Tetteh Ayitevie said the insurer believes that a workplace should epitomize excellence.
“Given that individuals spend a significant portion of their lives at work, it is essential that the workplace continually evolves to meet the personal and professional aspirations of its employees,” he said.
“We recognize that there is a direct correlation between a company’s culture and its performance. The culture of an organization can significantly affect employee satisfaction, productivity, and the overall bottom line. A strong culture can breed innovation, collaboration, and instill a sense of purpose among employees, while a weak culture can result in low morale, disengagement, and high staff turnover.”
PwC Uganda Senior Partner, Uthman Mayanja, said the survey provides an invaluable resource for CEOs and HR professionals, offering critical insight into the most successful practices for recruiting, managing and retaining top talent. He said the survey is a call to action for everyone to review and consider the best practices for human resource management, and organizations should take a proactive role in creating a better work environment for everyone.
