Renowned fashion designer Sylvia Damalie Owori, currently serving as Deputy Director of Operation Wealth Creation (OWC), has declared her intention to contest for the Tororo Woman Member of Parliament seat in the upcoming elections. This announcement comes amidst escalating tensions between Owori and the incumbent MP, Hon. Sarah Opendi, whom Owori accuses of spreading false information about her.
In a 2023 report by The INDEPENDENT, it was revealed that Owori is embroiled in land disputes with over 15 families in Tororo municipality. Allegations surfaced, accusing Owori of utilizing her security connections to attempt displacing these families from their homes. The issue gained parliamentary attention, with Hon. Sarah Opendi addressing it, much to Owori’s dismay.
Owori took to social media platform X to express her frustration, alleging that Opendi has been orchestrating a smear campaign against her, fueled by the perceived threat of Owori’s candidacy for the Tororo MP seat. Owori denounced Opendi’s actions as unprofessional and detrimental to the democratic process, emphasizing the need for a focus on substantive issues affecting Ugandans.
Despite Owori’s attempts to resolve the land disputes through legal means, Opendi persisted in her purported biased behavior, even questioning Owori’s Ugandan nationality and resorting to personal attacks. Owori condemned these actions as divisive and called upon Opendi to prioritize her parliamentary duties over engaging in petty politics.
Emphasizing the importance of serving constituents and promoting unity over discord, Owori reiterated her commitment to stand for the Tororo Woman MP seat. She asserted that Uganda deserves better than the divisive politics perpetuated by Opendi and urged for a cessation of such behavior.
