The 2021 MTV EMA, as ever, promised to have an affair to remember. With performances by Ed Sheeran, Maluma, Yungblud, Kim Petras, and more, and none other than Saweetie taking MC duties as host.
Justin Bieber led the nominations heading into the show, with a grand total of eight, including Best Artist, Best Pop, and two different nods in the Best Song category. But fellow pop heavy hitters Doja Cat, and Lil Nas followed right behind him with six each. Meanwhile, Olivia Rodrigo, The Kid Laroi and former EMA Host ED Sheraan all earned five nominations.
Wizkid was announced best African Act 2021,
This is the second EMA award by Wizkid after winning the last one in 2016. In a congratulatory post on Instagram, mtvbaseafrica wrote “HUGE congratulations to BIG WIZ @wizkidayo for winning Best African Act! From Lagos to the world” . Wizkid was nominated alongside fellow Nigerian and ‘Essence’ singer Tems.
Other African artists nominated under the African Act category were: Focalistic (South Africa), Diamond Platnumz (Tanzania), and Amaarae (Ghana). This latest EMA’s 2021 ‘Best African Act’ makes Wizkid the most celebrated artist by the EMA in Africa.
This is all to say: The nominations field in 2021 was absolutely stacked, the competition was quite fierce, and nothing was certain in terms of outcomes. That gives this year’s winners, all listed below, something big to celebrate.
